Although researching and visiting old fortifications is very interesting, there are some dangers.

Please beware of these dangers:

  • Take enough light (flashlights, spare batteries with you). It is very dark in old fortifications, electric light went out in Atlantikwall bunkers in 1945.
  • Fortifications have dangerous, sometimes, deep and hidden pits, lochs, etc.. Without light, it is impossible to see them. Accidents happen easily.
  • Most Atlantikwall fortifications were closed or disused after the war. This means that stairs, entrances, either are gone or rusted away.
  • Not a real threat, but  respect the use of old fortifications as a home for animals like bats. Bats hibernate between October and March. Do not disturb these animals during this time period unless you have permission from a related organization.
  • Last but not least, their are still large quantities of unused and unexploded ammunition in or near old Atlantikwall locations. Ammunitions becomes unstable when it is exposed to outside weather conditions. Not just large ammunition is dangerous. Particular the small ammunition is dangerous. When it explodes: it is to small to get killed, large enough to become permanent disabled!
